T.J. Edwards named Freshman All-American

Redshirt freshman inside linebacker led Badgers with 84 tackles

FWAA Freshman All-America Team

MADISON, Wis. — T.J. Edwards' debut season with the Wisconsin football team was an unqualified success.

At least that's the way the Football Writers Association of America saw it.

Edwards was recognized Monday for his efforts as a key contributor to a Wisconsin unit that ranked No. 2 in scoring defense and No. 3 in total defense in the FBS this season, earning a place on the FWAA Freshman All-America Team. A starter in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, Edwards led the Badgers in tackles with 84. He also logged 6.5 tackles for loss, broke up four passes and forced a fumble.

He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after racking up 16 tackles in UW's win over Purdue on Oct. 17.

Edwards' contributions helped the Badgers allow just 13.7 points and 268.5 total yards per game on the year. UW also finished ranked No. 4 nationally in rushing defense, at 95.4 yards per game, and No. 7 nationally in passing defense, at 173.2 yards per game.

Edwards is the fifth Wisconsin player to earn a place on the FWAA Freshman All-America Team, which dates back to 2001. He joins RB Anthony Davis (2001), RB P.J. Hill (2006), K Philip Welch (2008) and LB Chris Borland (2009).

One of three Big Ten players named to this year's 29-member team, Edwards joins Penn State RB Saquon Barkley and Michigan DB Jabrill Peppers.
