With all the negativity I was looking for something positive to think about. I think the 2023 team could have a special season. The two highly ranked recruiting classes becoming upperclassmen. Assuming of course JL is still coordinating the defense.
Offense: Senior year for Mertz could be strong if he keeps improving, hopefully under a new QB/OC coach in year 2. BA in his final year before the NFL, Dike/Allen/Bell at WR, Rucci/Cundiff at TE, Tippman, Bortolotti, Nelson, plus a ton of talented upperclassmen guys being coached up in year 2 by Bostad.
Defense: Senior Nick Herbig is the star along with all of that LB talent, Wohler as the star in the secondary; some concerns with DL, but hopefully Neal is ready to go at NT and perhaps a transfer portal pickup there
Specials: lose the kicker/punter but will have Calvaruso; maybe Mehlhaff upgrades the unit by then
Schedule: maybe the most important part - get Ohio State at home, along with Iowa. Toughest road games are at Wazzu and at Minn.
