I know they are both on different teams and we rely more on Happ than Maryland relies on Stone, and Marquette relies on Ellenson as much as we do on Happ if not more, but figured it would be fun to look at the statistical comparison's.
Happ averages 28 mins per game versus Stone's 20.8 mins, Ellenson's 32.4 mins
Happ averages 12.3 points per game versus Stones 12.8 points per game, Ellenson's 16.3 ppg
Happ averages 8.3 rebounds per game versus Stones 5.5 rebounds per game, Ellenson's 10 rebounds per game
Happ FT percentage 65.7% versus Stones 80.8%, Ellenson's 75%
Happ 1 block per game Stone 1.4, Ellenson's 1.7 blocks per game
Happ .9 assists per game Stone .2 assists per game, Ellenson's 1.9 assists per game
Happ FG % 55.1%, Stone 57.1%, Ellenson 42.1%
Obviously Happ had an advantage of college weight room for a year and working out with college athletes all of last season.
Question is other than the obvious of adding more depth at Center, how much of a difference would have Stone/Ellenson made for us this year? Would Happ have as much confidence and playing time now as he gets now if Stone/Ellenson was around? Would Happ be better by practicing vs Stone/Ellenson on a daily basis? Obviously if we had Ellenson we would have more of a complete player as he can hit from the outside, something Happ has not showed in his game to date.
Is the fact that we will likely have Happ for 4 years vs potentially having Stone/Ellenson for only for 1-2 years a good thing that we missed out on Stone/Ellenson?
My take is we are better off down the road by not getting Stone/Ellenson but with the Van Vilet not being allowed to play this year we obviously really could of used the depth of Stone/Ellenson. It would of been fun to watch Stone/Ellenson mature as the year went on with good coaching etc. Maybe would only have 2-3 losses so far this year had we had either Stone/Ellenson.
