The game gave us a look at what the offense looks like without Jonathan Taylor.
If we have to depend on a lineman to make a skill position play, we're lacking in play makers.
Playing against the one of the worst teams in FBS, we looked pedestrian.
On defense, it's not one of Leonhard's better days. We were too aggressive on defense. Illinois has a pocket passer and a runner. We crashed the edges repeatedly, leaving the runner open running lanes up the middle. The secondary allowed receivers run wide open downfield. It's as though the secondary was anticipating quick throws but when the pressure didn't get to the QB, receivers got behind the DBs. We also have defenders overpursuing or covering the wrong guy. Playing undisciplined, a result of being overaggressive.
Perhaps the game plan for the defense was to play super aggressive to help out the sputtering offense?
I do think that the offense is young (QB - So, WR - So/So/Fr, TB - Fr/So/Fr) but this does not look like a championship caliber team right now.
