QB: I watched the practice session and was NOT impressed with Horni.
He backpeddles and sets up slowly, his footwork and release are slow and the velocity on the ball is average at best, he has a good touch but just isn't progressing like I hoped, based on that practice.
We better run the ball and stay close or ahead in games, don't see him bringing us back from 14 down with his arm.
Lyles is tiny, not Russell Wilson fast, throws a decent ball, don't see him as a factor at all.
Coan impressed me more than the reports. This is a kid who should be in HS and was playing against plenty of veteran college guys.
I like his demeanor, think he uses his head which reflected in the wide open TD to Neuville where he just played catch rather than over or under throw a wide open receiver. He threw some harder when needed too.
Anybody who thinks he is a one year starter is wrong, unless we win them all with Horni and he is never injured, I see Coan rs'ing next season and competing for the job thereafter, he impressed me as an athlete and QB.
RB: I'm a big James guy, have been, from the beginning but Shaw's quick hitter, ability, his run right at them hard style, is a great change up from the more patient and deliberate James, who jukes more and looks for the HR that way.The combo should be great.I actually liked Brodners movement in practice, too bad he hurt his knee on that goaline run, just collapsed on its own.
Ol: couldn't tell much there, looked fine against a tough D.
WR: I thought AJ Taylor looks much better as a WR than this past season, think he's making the transition and starting to get it.Pryor made the few catches but more importantly, he looks the part , everyone thinks he's behind, maybe not, could get involved.
TE: Penniston, more and more reminds me of Garrett Graham.Maybe not as fast, GG ran some sub 4.7's , mostly right around 4.7 but both are similar sized in college, neither put on great weight first few years and Penniston can get open and catch.
DL: People rag on me about my interest in heights and weights but Rand is my classic example.
We hear in HS how he's 6'2 279 , crazy strong and we project him as a 6'2 295-300 lb athletic NT.
Instead he looks closer to 6'05 and weighs 269 and is probably miscast as a WSDE, I saw him make some plays but get engulfed and devoured on quite a few others by much taller, heavier OLS. Yes, the correct heights and weights do help us project what these kids might become.Rand was already pretty stuffed up , as a legit 6'2 he could have carried the needed 280-285+ lbs to play inside, at under 6'1 he can't..
Thought Kraig Howe flashed a little, he's very strong and has bought into occupying blockers , think he can be as good as Chikwe Obiasih, maybe a better football player overall.
Linebackers: The Ohio kid Grady MUST RS next season, crazy to waste him, save him and give him 2-3 big seasons, he has real closing speed. The kid who came in with him from Indiana, Burks , looks the part too and Rip Van Winkle and Bell are impressive too, loaded there.
SS: liked the looks of Currens, he got thicker very quickly and lost zero quickness, very instinctive player with good height and anticipation. The 4 star from Maryland is also instinctive and a player but very thin , built more like a CB but not as fast as one.
CB : The young guys looked good, we should be fine there, JL has everybody playing fast.
Overall, Horney scares the heck out of me and there's nobody else.We need to run it effectively, shut down other teams offenses and throw in third and 3-6 situations, right now I don't trust Horni, want too, but I don't.
