In the end, Wisconsin would have had to beat three of the four best teams in the country (plus very dangerous oregon and unc teams) to win the National title. That's a uniquely difficult path that I'm guessing is almost never navigated successfully. With that kind of opposition, you inevitably end up in close games, and its just asking a lot to expect to pull them all out. A break here, a break there, etc. So tough to beat them all.
