I know we just beat a Purdue team with a bad record and we didn't look great but still won by a much larger margin than undefeated Michigan State.
Michigan State beat Purdue 24-21
We all know Ohio State has had its struggles this year as well yet remains undefeated and ranked #1
Iowa undefeated despite us spotting them 4 turnovers and the short field for their only touchdown in a 10-6 victory.
I know we are having a down year running the ball, however our defense is pretty good and has some playmakers on it, and despite Stave's blunders vs Iowa we are passing it a lot more and getting yardage (just haven't been able to translate it into points a of yet)
In our first game vs Alabama we were able to pass the ball despite not being able to run and our defense made a lot of great plays, however we also got beat on a freakish play by Drake and then a sloppy play vs Henry up the gut. Overall though we showed moments were we could play with Bama despite having our defensive leader out of the game and playing 3 Offensive Lineman who never played a down before in college.
I feel we have a ways to go but I honestly do not feel we are that far behind the top ranked teams in the country, if we could run the ball like we have in the past I would have a lot more confidence in this team being able to beat the top ranked teams as our defense could keep us in the games especially if we had a running game giving us time of possession and making opposing defenses spend more time on the field and tiring during the 4th quarter.
I know we don't have the offensive weapons that Ohio State has, but there are not many other teams in the country with those kind of weapons. The teams with the offensive weapons have very poor defenses. TCU for example (played close to a down gopher team) Baylor has played no one. LSU struggled with Syracuse and needs to establish a consistent passing game or they won't have a chance of making the playoffs. Stanford lost to Northwestern early and we are finding out Northwestern is not as elite as the rankings made them out to be.
Utah has a balanced team but they almost got beat by Utah St. If Michigan had a qb who could throw to wide open wr they would of beat Utah early on.
In Summary a lot of parity and despite our running game letting us down so far we really are not that far from the top teams.
