I really like his arm strength. He gets the ball out on the receiver before the D can recover after a route. We converted some 3rd downs in which everyone knew the ball was likely going to Erickson just past the marker on a little hook route, yet Illinois defenders couldnt jump the route or break it up because the ball was delivered with good velocity. This also helped when getting the ball out into the flats to receivers. They got the ball quickly and were able to have time to turn and make a move to get extra yardage.
I blame a couple of our dropped passes on this velocity, but we will take a couple of those because it helps in so man instances.
Its easy to see the Houston has a little bit of a "gunslinger" mentality. The announcers kept saying that they were surprised that Bart was willing to throw to the middle of the field as much as he was. He seemed very confident. He may have tried to force a couple throws (2 interceptions in the endzone trying to put the ball in tight windows). But honestly, I am ok with this. Not saying Houston is Favre, but we loved Favre, even though he made some bonehead throws, because he kept the Defense on their toes and tried to make some incredible plays. With the arm strength that Houston has, he will be able to fit some passes in tight areas in order to come up with some great plays. It looks like he has the confidence to attempt these throws too.
I also liked Houstons mobility. It was nice to see him getting away from a pass rush every so often. A few times come to mind where, even though he didnt complete a pass, he was able to get to the outside and avoid being sacked. Stave doesnt have this mobility.
So overall, better arm strength, more mobility, more creative and able to make plays with his arm better than Stave.
I think the QB position will be improved with Bart at the helm next year
