Got my first look at Patrick Baldwin Jr. on Friday night in a matchup of two of the top three freshmen in the state (Baldwin Jr. and David Joplin; Michael Foster is considered the consensus No. 1 at this point). I came in with pretty high expectations but I think even those were surpassed.
To start, Baldwin Jr. is super long at 6-foot-8 and around 190 pounds. But the thing that stood out to me was just how well he understands the game on both ends. His fundamentals - specially how he moves without the ball - was awfully impressive. Footwork on both ends was really advanced and I love Baldwin's feel for the flow and pace. That said, it's not surprising, considering his dad, Pat Baldwin, is the head coach at UWM.
Baldwin Jr. is a plus shooter at this point, though his shot could use a bit more loft. He handles the ball extremely well and is comfortable running the offense. Another thing I really liked was his willingness to post up. He's still a bit raw in the paint and prefers the perimeter, but I could see Baldwin Jr. being a force down low once he gets stronger and more confident.
Recruiting-wise, UNLV has already offered and Baldwin Jr. would appear to be a no-doubt high-major kid. People who have a better national perspective think both him and Foster are top 10 kids in the 2021 class. No reason to think Wisconsin won't offer here at some point. Northwestern (which had a coach in attendance last night) could definitely be a program to watch, considering his dad's connections to that program. Sky is limit for this kid and you would imagine his dad makes sure he continues to progress in the right direction.
