SEPT. 7, 2019

CAMP RANDALL STADIUM

MADISON, WIS.

TEAM NOTES

·Today’s captains: senior OLB Zack Baun, junior C Tyler Biadasz, senior ILB Chris Orr, junior RB Jonathan Taylor.

·Wisconsin won its home opener for the 24th consecutive season, a run that dates back to 1996. Only Florida (29 entering Saturday) owns a longer active streak among FBS teams.

·The Badgers won their first-ever meeting with Central Michigan and improved to 33-2 all-time vs. the current membership of the Mid-American Conference.

·Paul Chryst improved to 44-12 (.786) in his fifth season as UW’s head coach, including a 17-2 mark in regular-season non-conference games.

·Wisconsin is 55-15 (.786) since the start of the 2014 season. Only Alabama (68-6, .919), Clemson (66-7, .904), Ohio State (64-7, .901) and Oklahoma (55-13, .809) have more wins among FBS teams in that span.

·The Badgers are 30-5 (.857) at Camp Randall Stadium since the start of the 2014 season — fourth best in the nation. Only Alabama (34-1, .971), Clemson (35-1, .972) and Ohio State (34-3, .919) have better home winning percentages than the Badgers during that span.

·The Badgers scored 60 points in a game for the 11th time in school history. Of those 11 games, 6 have come with Paul Chryst as a member of the coaching staff.

·With 599 total yards of offense, Wisconsin posted its highest total since racking up 627 vs. Nebraska on Nov. 15, 2014.

·The Badgers put up 44 points in the first half, the most in a half since the Badgers scored 45 in the second half of an 83-20 win over Indiana on Nov. 13, 2010.

·The Badgers dominated the first downs category, 37-3. The marks UW’s most first downs and fewest allowed since at least 1998.

·Wisconsin went 11-for-13 (84.6%) on third down, the team’s highest conversion rate since at least 1998.

·The Badgers recorded consecutive shutouts for the first time since opening the 2013 season by blanking UMass and Tennessee Tech.

·Wisconsin has not allowed a point since the firsts quarter of the 2018 Pinstripe Bowl, owning a scoreless streak spanning 11 quarters.

·Through 2 games, the UW defense has allowed just 215 total yards and 41 yards rushing, those are the team’s lowest 2-game totals since at least 1998.

·The Badgers have played 17 non-conference games at Camp Randall Stadium since 2013 and have held 8 of those opponents without an offensive touchdown. UW’s 17 opponents over that span have averaged just 8.4 points per game — including 4 shutouts.

·Sophomore John Chenal forced a fumble on a Central Michigan punt attempt in the first quarter, leading to the Badgers’ first safety since D’Cota Dixon sacked Northwestern QB Clayton Thorson in the end zone on Sept. 30, 2017.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

·Junior RB Jonathan Taylor finished with 102 yards and 3 touchdowns on 19 carries, while adding 3 catches for 17 yards and a receiving touchdown.

oTaylor scored the 32nd and 33rd rushing touchdowns of his career in the first quarter, adding the 34th in the third quarter. He scored the 3rd touchdown reception of his career — all this season — on a 17-yard pass from Jack Coan in the second quarter.

oTaylor is the first FBS player since 2000 to start the season with 4+ total TDs in consecutive games. The last Big Ten player to have 4+ total TDs in consecutive games was Wisconsin’s Montee Ball (vs. Penn State on Nov. 26, 2011 and vs. Michigan State on Dec. 3, 2011).

oDating back to 2000, Taylor’s 8 total touchdowns are the 2nd-most by any FBS player through his first 2 games of a season (Arizona State’s Kalen Ballage had 9 in 2016).

oDating back to 1996, Taylor is just the 3rd Wisconsin running back with at least 3 touchdown receptions in a season, joining Montee Ball (6 in 2011) and Melvin Gordon (3 in 2014).

oTaylor topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the 24th time in his 29-game career, matching Anthony Davis for the third-most 100-yard games by a Badger. Only Ron Dayne (33) and Montee Ball (26) have more.

oThrough 2 games, Taylor now has 5 catches for 65 yards with 3 TDs. He had a total of 8 catches for 60 yards with 0 TDs all of last year.

·Junior QB Jack Coan set career highs in completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns, going 26-for-33 for 363 yards with 3 TD passes and no interceptions (201.2 pass efficiency rating) in his first start at Camp Randall Stadium.

oCoan’s 363 yards are the 5th-highest single-game total in school history and the most by a Badgers QB since Tyler Donovan threw for 392 yards vs. Illinois on Oct. 6, 2007.

oCoan became the 11th Badger to throw for 300 yards in a game, doing so for the 24th time in school history — and the first since Joel Stave threw for 322 yards in back-to-back weeks at Nebraska (Oct. 10) and vs. Purdue (Oct. 17) in 2015.

oCoan went 18-for-22 for 276 yards in the first half, the highest yardage total ever by a Badgers player in a first half, surpassing John Stocco’s 250 yards vs, Indiana on Sept. 30, 2006. Coan added 3 touchdowns in the period to post a passing efficiency rating of 232.2.

oThe Badgers have won each of Coan’s last 4 starts, dating back to last season. He is now 4-2 as UW’s starting quarterback.

·Junior WR Quintez Cephus set career highs with 6 catches for 130 yards and also matched his career high with 2 touchdown receptions. Cephus’ total marked the most receiving yards for a Badger since A.J. Taylor had 134 vs. New Mexico last season.

·Senior WR A.J. Taylor caught 7 passes (1 shy of his career best vs. Miami in the 2017 Orange Bowl) for 78 yards.

·Freshman QB Graham Mertz made his Badgers debut, entering in the third quarter, going 4-for-5 for 35 yards.

·Redshirt freshman QB Chase Wolf attempted his first-career pass, a 2-yard completion to FB John Chenal.

·Redshirt freshman RB Nakia Watson scored his second-career touchdown on a 2-yard run. He carried the ball 8 times for 29 yards.

·Redshirt freshman RB Brady Schipper notched his first career carry in the fourth quarter.

·Playing in his 43rd career game, senior OL David Moorman made the first start of his career, lining up at right tackle.

·Sophomore OL Kayden Lyles made the 1st offensive line start of his career, and 8th overall (started 7 games as a defensive lineman in 2018).

·Freshman NT Keeanu Benton made the first start of his career, making tackle for loss.

·Senior OLB Zack Baun recorded his second sack in as many games, giving him 4.5 in his career.

·Junior OLB Noah Burks made the first start of his career finishing with 2 tackles, including his first-career tackle for loss and pass break-up.

·Sophomore ILB Jack Sanborn recorded the first interception of his career in the second quarter, returning the pick of Central Michigan QB Q Dormady 39 yards.

·Freshman ILB Leo Chenal tied junior ILB Mike Maskalunas for the team lead with 4 tackles.

·Sophomore K Collin Larsh connected on the first field goal of his career, a 28-yarder, in the third quarter. He missed a 51-yard attempt in the second quarter.
