The reality is that we've rarely gotten the very highly rated QB's to come to UW because of the offense they run. You look at the best QB's we've had since BA took over and I'd rate them in this order:
Russell Wilson 1 year wonder, obviously a clear #1. Smallish and underrecruited in HS. Very big coup
Scott Tolzien 1 of BB's Sunday six. An afterthought.
Jack Coan A true 4 star that did well for us.
Joel Stave Walkon, no real accolades in the recruiting world.
Darell Bevell 165 lb wonder out of HS.
Stocco Good results but unheralded as a recruit
Hornibrook Meh all around

Those are the guys with results. We offered and landed more guys with higher accolades in Lyles (the dad), Owen Daniels and such, but ended up not playing the position.

The reality is, the program has found diamonds in the rough that can manage a game for a long time. Obviously Mertz is a recruiting aberration and we'll actually see where it goes. As Patrick says in another thread, the next 4 star QB is going to need a big NIL contract to attract them here....otherwise it's going to be more recruiting like we are seeing right now that is trying to get guys under the radar (on the cheap)....which hasn't worked out too badly, but it will never get us to the proverbial "next level".
