Swamp Kings

Anyone watch the new documentary on Netflix? My initial reaction was that I couldn't believe the likely number of questionable U of F admits on that team. I get that every team takes a flyer on one or two players but it seemed like a big portion of their roster wasn't in it for the academic experience. Pretty surprising for such a quality academic school like Florida.

Ranking Wisconsin's defensive position groups by depth

Much tougher exercise to do with the defense. On offense, tight end is the clear weak link. ...I think they feel good about their depth at most (if not all) of the positions.

Michael Roeske, listed Friday night at 6-foot-8 and 290 pounds, is one of the more physically impressive prospects I’ve seen live over the last 15-plus years. I’d put him in the same category as J.C. Latham and a few others as a kid who really makes you say “wow” when you see him in person.

The junior from Wautoma looks to be all of his listed height and weight, but he’s very, very lean for a projected offensive tackle. With that, he has a frame to add plenty of good weight over the next two years of high school and into college. In a few years, I think Roeske will play comfortably in the 325-pound range. He also has a huge lower body with monster calves, and Roeske already looks like a collegiate tackle.

I don’t usually say that offensive linemen are “fast,” but Roeske runs incredibly well for his size. I saw it in drills and then again on the first play of the game when he pulled from his tackle position. Roeske gets up field and into the second level as well as any lineman I’ve seen in person, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ran a sub 5.0-second 40-yard dash.

Roeske played both tackle spots in Wautoma’s run-heavy offense. He can obviously move the pile and have his way with the defender across the line of scrimmage, but I really liked when he got out in space as a leader blocker. In the few pass protection sets that I saw on Friday, I liked Roeske’s kick slide and react technique. I’m guessing it’s something that Jack Bicknell Jr. worked on during Roeske’s camp stop at Wisconsin this summer.

On the defensive side of the ball, Wautoma lined Roeske up at tackle or over the center for the majority of the first half and third quarter. When they moved him to end in the fourth quarter, however, he was a lot more productive because Laconia had a more difficult time double teaming him. Roeske closes ground in a hurry and can also disrupt passing lanes with his huge wingspan.

REMAINING QUESTIONS

As we’ve written and talked about before with kids this size at some of the smaller schools in the state, it’s difficult to get a great evaluation. Roeske was probably six inches taller and at least 50 pounds heavier than every kid he went up against on Friday night, and that won’t change much this season.

We saw a lot of run blocking, and I credit Roeske for keeping good pad level - for the most part - and not reaching down at defenders. We really didn’t get to see any pass protection, though, which is unfortunate because I think it’s an area where Roeske would excel.

On the defensive side of the ball I was looking for a bit more disruption. Roeske flashed at times but I expected him to dominate a bit more. That said, he played both sides of the ball and Laconia did a nice job of addressing him in their scheme and play design. Wautoma doesn't offer much on either side of the ball outside of Roeske, and Laconia won comfortably, 28-7, on Friday.

OUTLOOK/RECRUITMENT

It’s still early in Roeske’s recruitment, but I’ve been told that Wisconsin and Notre Dame are the two schools to watch right now. And between the two, the Badgers have the upper hand, according to someone I spoke with last night. I put in a FutureCast for UW a few weeks ago and still feel very good about that pick. I think Roeske could get things done as early as this fall, but I know he wants to take some more game-day visits over the next few months.

Rivals.com currently doesn’t have a ranking on Roeske. I would put him right now as a high three-star (5.7) or low four-star (5.8). There are still some questions I have, but there’s not many juniors in the country who look like Roeske.

WISCONSIN COMPARISON ON THE CURRENT ROSTER

I’m not saying that Roeske is (or will) develop into a five-star talent, but in terms of his body composition, Nolan Rucci is a good comparison. Both are in the 6-foot-8 range with a long frame to add plenty of good weight and strength.
